Abstract

The global shift towards clean energy has led to the rapid development of offshore energy platforms (OEPs), such as wind, tidal, and wave energy systems. While these installations contribute to sustainable energy goals, they also introduce potential navigational risks and safety concerns for maritime traffic. This research aims to address the challenges posed by OEPs by examining existing regulations, assessing potential hazards, and developing safety guidelines. Previous literature, including studies on offshore wind farms in the UK, highlights the importance of traffic surveys, risk assessments, and flexible boundary guidelines to mitigate navigational risks. Key international conventions, such as UNCLOS and MARPOL, provide a legal foundation but often lack specificity for OEP operations. The project seeks to fill this gap by analyzing navigation-specific regulations and offering practical recommendations for risk mitigation both during the design stage of these energy systems and during their operation. By identifying best practices and safety guidelines, this research contributes to the sustainable growth of offshore energy systems while safeguarding marine navigation and operations. The findings will be valuable for developers and maritime stakeholders.
