Abstract
Homelessness and foster care pose significant barriers to educational success, preventing students from fully engaging in their learning environments. This research investigates student homelessness in Detroit Public Schools Community District to support the Office of Homeless and Foster Care (OHFC) in identifying and assisting vulnerable populations. Through data-driven analysis, the study examines socioeconomic factors across residential areas to identify potential underreporting of homeless students. Statistical analysis further demonstrates the impact of homelessness on academic outcomes, including higher dropout rates, chronic absenteeism, and lower post-secondary enrollment. Findings suggest that certain school areas may be under-identifying homeless students, highlighting the need for improved identification/awareness methods. By visualizing these trends and their academic consequences, this research underscores the importance of targeted interventions, such as expanded family support services, staff training, transportation assistance, and access to basic needs. These insights empower OHFC and other stakeholders to develop data-informed strategies that address student homelessness and promote educational equity.
