Abstract

Kidney cancer accounts for over 130,000 deaths globally each year, and poses a high risk of morbidity when it results in bone metastases–which is present in around one-third of patients with renal cancer. The spread of malignant cells to bones results in bone deterioration and supports tumor growth via alteration of the bone microenvironment. This study aims to investigate the effects of renal cancer cells on osteoblasts. The interactions between renal cell carcinoma cell lines 786-O and UOK-127 and mouse-derived osteoblast cell line MC3T3 were studied through alizarin red staining to measure mineralization levels, alkaline phosphatase flurorometric assay (ALP) to monitor ALP serum level, and PCR to assess RunX2 and RANKL expression. They were compared against a control of conditioned media.
