Abstract
This research explores the rapidly evolving U.S. electric vehicle (EV) battery supply chain, focusing on industrial domestic policy developments and their implications for battery cell manufacturers. By tracking key players, strategies, investments, partnerships, emerging technologies, and project timelines, the research aims to provide a comprehensive view of the industry’s current state and trajectory. A central aspect of this analysis is the impact of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), which has served as a catalyst for significant growth in the domestic battery supply chain. The IRA’s provision of substantial funding and incentives has enabled companies to expand manufacturing capabilities, forge new partnerships, and accelerate project timelines. We’ve been tracking this by keeping up with the news on several platforms (NaatBatt, Volta, Benchmark) and by doing company specific deep-dives as well as using company reports, press releases, and general news sources. By focusing on different companies each week, the analysis identifies key challenges to the industry’s trajectory. This approach provides a dynamic database and an up-to-date understanding of the challenges and opportunities. However, the transition from gas vehicles to EVs presents considerable challenges. Battery manufacturers must balance the demands of automakers, emissions standards, and profitability while constantly innovating in battery chemistry to meet evolving performance and cost goals. Companies face “growing pains†as they scale, with issues like raw material sourcing, workforce development, and infrastructural support (e.g., state and federal incentives, charging networks) looming large. The battery suppliers often hold technological expertise automakers lack, making their partnerships indispensable. As the new U.S. administration signals a slowdown in policy incentives, progress in the domestic EV battery supply chain may decelerate. Yet, advancements in solid-state battery technology, recycling, and a growing emphasis on sustainability indicate long-term promise.
