Abstract

There are various conditions that can result from cardiac issues, including sudden infant death syndrome or sudden cardiac death. These conditions, and many more other diseases, are related to the cardiovascular system and may result from specific genes present in the system, such as hERG, KCNQ1 and KDR. This study investigates the behavior of various currents in cells with the KCNQ1 cell line. The techniques used in this study include cell patching to record the electrical currents of cells and the staining of cells in order to more easily view and image them. The cell recordings should show various currents of KCNQ1 cells, transfected and untransfected. These findings allow us to see the correlation between various genes and the amount of electrical activity each cell has. The findings should also show the implications of various polypeptides in these cell cultures and how they impact current activity and electrical activity. The specific activity we are looking for is in the Iks current. We hope to determine how KCNQ1 cells help express the Iks current activity. Finding any irregularities in electrical current measurements can allow us to discover why certain cardiac abnormalities occur and how to prevent these conditions in the future.
