Abstract
A systematic scoping review was conducted to investigate the “self†within home-based physical therapy. Consistency is a crucial aspect of a patient’s recovery andadherence to at-home exercises outside the physical therapy clinic is essential to maintain and progress with a patient’s recovery. However, there can be barriers when it comes to the completion of a patient’s home exercise program (HEP). Psychological barriers like low self-esteem and self-confidence, lack of self-efficacy, and self-motivation are overwhelmingly present within at-home-based physical therapy. To evaluate the presence of these barriers and assess adherence, the following search protocol was used on databases provided by the University of Michigan’s Library. The search protocol included “self-efficacy†OR “self-efficacyâ€, accompanied by the following “Home exercise program†OR “HEP†OR “at-home exercises†AND “Physical therapy†OR “PT†OR “rehabilitation.†These scientific articles were read and reviewed for relevance which were then further analyzed for key concepts/themes, commonalities, and discrepancies of authors. Additionally, gaps have been identified in current published literature that pertain to the “self†within at-home physical therapy practices. Using these key concepts, themes, and gaps will allow researchers within physical therapy to identify areas of expertise in addition to specific knowledge within the field that needs further research.
