Using ECOSTRESS satellite data to understand urban heat islands and green spaces in Southeastern Michigan

Abstract

Urban heat islands (UHIs) add serious heat-related risks in cities, especially impacting lower-income communities. This research examines correlations between UHI intensity and socioeconomic factors, focusing on how impoverished areas experience heightened temperatures compared to wealthier regions. By using high-resolution ECOSTRESS data, we’re able to look closely at how extreme heat affects low-income neighborhoods compared to their wealthier counterparts. Early results suggest that these neighborhoods face more intense heat, likely due to less green space and more heat-retaining surfaces. This work aims to support urban planning efforts to reduce these risks and improve conditions for the communities most affected by urban heat.
