Dear future self,<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Through a fortuitous combination of guidance, others\u2019 faith, and a renewed sense of purpose (however dramatic it all may sound), your past self is here and working. She has never formally conducted research in the humanities, nor has she worked with a small group pf people that is predicated on sustained collaboration, conversation, and utilizing our minds\u2019 literate tools. She is about to push herself to think hard and write well not with the end goal of taking a test or writing an essay for a grade, but for writing a literature review and building an original poster for an audience that surpasses the boundaries, limitations of a classroom. So who exactly is part of that audience, besides my peers and fellows, and the academics who will be attending the Summer Symposium? The lack of graded expectations, of course, should not lead her to performing disinterestedly and tiredly. She should treat this two-month experience as an unorthodox test of her developing ability to work efficiently and independently. UROP is a new community to have embraced her, and of course she looks forward to participating in and benefitting from it. Unfortunately, it has come as she begins to wean off of her undergraduate years at Michigan as a rising senior. But better late than never. I hope she is able to foster a new feeling during the high months of summer: that of being in the embrace of women of color; their interests and concerns. Her future research that is yet to take place after this experience is over will probably not delve into this sense; but no matter that, I hope she pays attention to the feeling, so that she does not let it get away.<\/p>\n
