[su_heading size=”19″ margin=”30″]The research project I am working on with Dr. Cotera is called Chicana Por Mi Raza. The project focuses on recovering and documenting the activism work of Chicana Feminists during the 60\u2019s and 70\u2019s through a digital archive.[\/su_heading]<\/p>\n

The impact of my research challenges how the Chicano Movement and Second Wave Feminists have been framed in history as a male-dominated and white middle-class movement. Dr. Cotera began Chicana Por Mi Raza<\/em> in 2009 because of the frustration she encountered in realizing how the work of her mother, Martha P. Cotera, and other Chicana feminists had been lost and invisible when she was learning about both movements. She used her scholarly platform to re-shape the movements that had excluded her mothers work, which is why she created a decolonial public digital space where community members, scholars, teachers, and students could have access to all the resources, interviews, documents, oral histories, etc. collected over time.<\/span><\/p>\n

I choose to be part of her research project because I thought that by being a Human Communications major with a concentration in Chicanx Studies I would have enough knowledge of what her work would be about. However, once I began working on it, I soon realized I knew absolutely nothing. The Chicano Movement during the 60\u2019s and 70\u2019s continues to be focused on seeing and hearing it through the lens and voices of Chicano men who allowed history to document it as a movement only centered around issues of race\/ethnicity. It was embarrassing to not know any of the women I came across when fixing their files on the digital archive, but if someone asked me to \u00a0recall some of the Chicano men who were active, I could absolutely name them and discuss about what their role was (for example, <\/span>C\u00e9sar Ch\u00e1vez, Rodolfo \u201cCorky\u201d Gonz\u00e1les, Reies L\u00f3pez Tijerina, Sal Castro, Ruben Salazar).<\/span><\/p>\n

Working on Chicana Por Mi Raza<\/em> allowed me to comprehend how this project will impact anyone who does not want to repeat history by being conscious about how anyone can be oppressed and a oppressor at the same time. If Chicano’s in the Chicano Movement could be oppressive to the Chicana’s by not being aware about how they were fighting against sexism within the movement, then anyone else could repeat it as well. <\/span><\/p>\n

Research ethics play a major role in this project because it enforces me to make sure to be honest and work hard when working on the project because this is such a valuable project that is <\/span>giving voice to the voiceless, which is it is so important and valuable! Also, working with Dr. Cotera is an honor!<\/span><\/p>\n
