This summer, I’ll be working with Ph.D. candidate Emily Vargas in the Psychology department to interview female surgeons about their perceptions of control and social functioning, along with their overall psychological health. Surgery overall is considered to be a highly masculine field, but with both feminine and masculine subspecialties within. While my own surgical knowledge is limited to Grey’s Anatomy, it’s easy to see the general issues faced for women in male-dominated fields. However, by comparing specialities, we hope to see how a female surgeon’s environment can influence her psychological well-being.<\/p>\n
As for the importance, most people would probably like to know what factors are influencing their surgeon’s mental health. In no way is this a project aimed to show that “women shouldn’t be surgeons because of x, y, and z” but rather to work to reveal how there’s more work to be done in making hospitals a more equal place for its employees, rather than assuming equality once women were allowed to be surgeons in the first place.<\/p>\n
Certainly this research has the most influence on female surgeons and those in hospitals who work for equality, but this is also something that can reveal a greater problem in male-dominated fields. Hopefully everyone can look at research such as this and use it to recognize subtle problems in society that are too often dismissed (I suppose retired people don’t have to, but everyone who works probably encounters gender\u00a0\u00a0\u00af\\_(\u30c4)_\/\u00af).<\/p>\n
And last but not least, ethics will of course be used in this research. We will be interviewing surgeons from UM’s own hospital, whose identities will have to be kept confidential, along with the identities of anyone they might mention during interviews. Their names and the data collected will of course be private, and even if someone tells the craziest story I have ever heard, my lips will be sealed.<\/p>\n
