So recently, in the search for material concerning the history behind South Asian portrayals in Bollywood movies, I found a super cool article by\u00a0Aswin Punathambekar called “Bollywood in the Indian-American
\ndiaspora:\u00a0 Mediating a transitive logic of cultural citizenship.”\u00a0 In that article, they talk about a groundbreaking Bollywood film that managed to emotionally resonate with both the Indian populous and Indian diaspora called “Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham…<\/i>” (Sometimes there’s Happiness, Sometimes there’s Sorrow…<\/i>; also commonly abbreviated as K3G).<\/p>\n

With how this article related to me and my past experiences, K3G was one of the first Bollywood movies that I ended up watching as a child with my parents in the cozy living room of our apartment.\u00a0 It was pretty much what constituted a staple Bollywood movie at the time for any Indian-American child growing up here until the late 2000’s\/early 2010’s.<\/p>\n

With the article in question,\u00a0Punathambekar discusses in ethnographic and thematic detail the role K3G has in discussing the Indianness regarding the diaspora and how they try to obtain it.\u00a0 The emotional impact it has on first-generation Indians (i.e. people like my parents who immigrated to the United States in their early 20’s) is due to the departure it takes from the stories depicted in earlier Bollywood films in its attempt to represent the daily struggles of\u00a0Indians living out of the country.\u00a0 By including NRIs into what constitutes as an ideal Indian family, K3G ends up not only detailing the struggles of being Indian in the U.S., but also connects it to India’s recent entry in a global economy at the time (the movie was released in December 2001) and how NRIs try to navigate this space.\u00a0\u00a0Punathambekar argues that the representational strategies employed in K3G allow first-generation Indians in the U.S. to be emotionally invested in the idea of India and also plays a part in the Indian nation state’s attempts to forge symbolic and material ties to the Indian diaspora.<\/p>\n

So yeah, that’s one among of the many articles I’ve been looking through in my spare time.\u00a0 Honestly, it kind of makes me want to binge watch some old Bollywood movies again. \ud83d\ude00<\/p>\n
