When I first came to this university, I thought I was going to major in Environmental Studies. I wasn’t super passionate about it, but I liked it enough and I figured it was my only option. That all changed when I took my first coding and stats classes, something my small high school didn’t offer.\u00a0 I finally found the passion for a career I’d been looking for. Now I know the field I want to go into, even if I’m not exactly sure what my future in that field will look like. However, I almost didn’t take the classes that lead me to this realization because of my fear of failing.<\/p>\n
Majoring in Data Science means braving through a slew of tough pre-reqs including calculus, linear algebra, and computer programming classes. One of my goals for college has been to take classes even if they have the stigma of being hard. I’ve really been trying to work on losing the fear of not doing well in all of my classes, because I believe that fear keeps a lot of people, women especially, from taking STEM classes. If I had followed my instinct and not taken EECS 183 because of its reputation, I wouldn’t have found my passion for Data Science.\u00a0 I think that’s why the Growth, Grit, and Stick seminar spoke to me so much. It reinforced the thought process I’ve been working toward. The theme that failure makes people able to reach their full potential is so important. I have a tendency to shy away from failure-prone experiences. However, having the mindset that failure is a good thing that makes us better will hopefully help me to push myself to embrace failure and take risks. After all, accepting failure as an option is why I am where I am. Things as simple as applying to programs like WAGSFP means accepting that rejection can and will happen at some point. It is my goal to keep putting myself out there, even if it means exposing myself to defeat.
