Starting with my goals, I think they’re the reason that I had a really high perseverance score on that sheet. I’ve always known (okay not always, but like since high school) that I wanted to study psychology and go to graduate school. I had no personal experience with either but the idea just feels right, and I know I’m willing to do whatever it takes to make it happen. As for what I’m looking forward to, in my current mindset it’s probably going to be doing my senior honors thesis and applying to grad schools and all that. But I’m also a huge sucker for motivational quotes, so it only takes one before I’m ready to conquer the world. Reflecting on these things during the talk yesterday made me realize a small detail I didn’t know about myself either: when it comes to getting exams back in my classes, I really do care more about the feedback than I do the grade. I remember being in my Latin classes (thankfully I’m done with those) and trying to pull out the patterns where I was falling behind so that I could work harder in those areas. And it worked. Or my English class, where “grading is objective, and this is a subjective subject” so we basically received participation grades, which annoyed me because I wanted feedback on my writing abilities.

As for these coming years, I think my biggest challenge will be maintaining this growth mindset when I’m busy. If I’m constantly working on assignments and research, it might be hard to take the time to really analyze where I can grow in each class and working on it. However, everything I’m doing this year is something that I’m interested in, so I’m going to be positive and know that there’s more motivation to grow when I’m genuinely interested in the subject.

My recent successes probably include being in this program, being at UMich, and just being motivated to start working on GRE studying and other research related things. Oh and being able to recognize that I can reach out and ask my research mentor for advice about grad school as well. My main challenges have definitely been trying to balance friends/downtime with a busy summer schedule, just because I don’t really have a lot of deadlines so I feel like I can just take breaks from working a lot. I know that when the school year comes around, I’ll be failing a lot more 🙂

I think it’s safe to say that a lot of us had heard the whole “failure is the key to success” line, but yesterday’s presentation made me think about certain aspects of my life differently.
