These first few weeks have been challenging to say the least. However the remote nature of my work has not been at the forefront of my struggle. Between the pandemic and the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, and many other black people at the hands of the police, causing a new wave of the Black Lives Matter Movement, I’ve felt overwhelmed. In that vain, I’m learning patience, primarily with myself, during this time. Being that I am a black, queer person in society, the anger and grief I’ve felt has absolutely effected my ability to research, as it should. It should anger people, give them pause, and make them question what “returning to normalcy” should look like. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Black Lives Matter Movement has really emphasized the importance of social identity in research for me. My project is on art pertaining to women and LGBTQ+ identities by those who are incarcerated and has given me the opportunity to learn more about the legal and carceral system and find connection in my own studies for my major. Additionally, this project is directly related to my identity. Representation and historical revelation are incredibly important. What is historical revelation? It means the uncovering, discussion, and education of stories from history that are little known due to existing power structures in society that marginalize people and their stories. While my studies thus far in my college career have taught my the importance of history to many disciplines including medicine, science, and technology, these past couple weeks have ingrained that idea into me, specifically as in pertains to those of marginalized identities. That passion and drive I have to expose these stories is what will carry me through the rest of this fellowship and my life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
