We’re finally starting to get into the meat of the project. Writing has begun. As much as I love reading, learning, analyzing in information, I’m really excited that I am now beginning to synthesize and outline what I have learned for others to eventually see and experience. The platform my project is using will allow me to tell the story of queerness in prison in a concise but detailed way which is important. This platform will also allow the telling of history to unfold in a way that is approachable for many audiences. These things is incredibly important, because this story is one that needs to be told and understood. It is not enough that it’s being told; it matters how it’s told, and I intend to tell it well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I think telling and listening to stories are parts of exercising empathy. I’m not saying it should be on the part of the storyteller to manage or police their tone. Quite the opposite. Emotion is necessary. This might be a controversial opinion with regards to research, but bear with me. Emotion and facts are at the essence of any true sense of understanding about a situation. It is a fact that people are being evicted from their apartments during this pandemic. However, unfortunately in this case, this sentence alone in and of itself is not enough to evoke empathy and incite action. In reading these facts, it is largely on the part of the reader or listener to take that fact and see the emotion involved. See the pain of losing your home. See the sense of chaos. But also see the resilience of people despite this. It is largely up to the reader to see these things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Due to social conditioning, we aren’t accustomed to doing this. When we’re only taught the oppressor’s side of history how are we then supposed to empathize with oppressed? Which brings me back to the importance of this project I’m a part of. The storytelling of this project is important, because we are only taught one part of history, a side of history that has been made to eclipse the rest. Though it should not have to be, these parts of history we are not told have to be loud enough and bright enough to cause us to examine deeper, look into the cracks of the fa\u00e7ade to find the pain and triumph behind the stories of the silenced. And eventually, through this, the fa\u00e7ade crumbles.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
