At least, that’s what I’m doing. I’ve learned a lot in the past month, and I’m excited to show everyone what I’ve learned.

I have familiarized myself with two new tools that are really commonly used in research. SPSS and Zotero. If anyone has taken Stats250, it’s kind of like R. You can put in all your data, create histograms, correlation tables, and scatterplots. There’s a lot of stuff you can do with SPSS, and my mentor is still teaching me about it. I’ve realized that it’s skills like these that you probably won’t find in classes, but are crucial in becoming a well-rounded researcher and student that can use to secure a fellowship, job, internship, lab position, etc. A lot of these external programs you have seek out how to learn on your own, but it might just be the thing that makes or break an interview process. I’ve realized that college isn’t just about learning in classes, but connecting you to the resources so that you can shape the specific extent of your education. I’m really glad that I’ve had this chance to learn about SPSS and Zotero, because I’m not sure if I would have known or had the motivation to seek it out on my own.

I think it’s because I’ve realized how important these skills are to learn in general, I’ll definitely keep learning and doing research after this program is over. Even though I won’t be getting paid to learn and do research, it’s something I want to do. Depending on what area of research you ae in, it really changes the chances of how likely you are to be getting paid. Especially for more humanities or social scienced based research, it’s quite unlikely you will get paid. Of course, it all depends on your personal preferences, but I’ve come to the realization that with a wonderful and sincere mentor and work you’re passionate about, maybe not getting paid over the summer is okay. I won’t be doing anything else anyways, so why not learn?

I hope everyone’s project is going well and I’m excited to see them soon!

Joyce

Hi everyone, We’re nearing the end of our UROP program, and I feel like everyone is probably tying up a lot of their loose ends and getting their project ready.
