Looking back at my first blog entry, I was very nervous. I had never done this type of research before and I was afraid that I would set back the research team. However, through these past couple of weeks, I can confidently say that I have learned so much. I not only learned so much about newborn drug screenings, but my mentors also provided me with lots of opportunities to delve deeper into Black women\u2019s health. I loved reading all of the suggested literature and seeing how these authors spoke about the racial disparities in women\u2019s health. I was already passionate about this topic and these literature readings provided me with more context. Additionally, I was so nervous at the prospect of conducting qualitative interviews. I had limited experience with this research method. While I haven\u2019t conducted my first interview yet, I am more confident in my ability to do well. We have completed numerous trainings surrounding interviews and I have also been observing past interviews through my transcribing tasks. I\u2019m hoping to use those experiences to better inform me when I finally interview someone for the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One challenge that I had over the summer was obtaining enough hours. In the beginning, I was mostly reading a few literature pieces and attending a few meetings. I dealt with the challenge by using some of my hours to complete my required and recommended UROP trainings. This allowed me to raise my hours as my mentors thought of other responsibilities that they could give me. After a while, I reached out to one of the team members and asked if they had any additional assignments or tasks that they would like assistance with. By reaching out to her, she added me and another undergraduate assistant to recruitment\/outreach. My additional assignment was to reach out to participants and see if they were interested in joining our study. This not only helped with my UROP hours but also allowed me to see the specifics of the recruitment process for a clinical research project.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As my time in WAGSFP comes to an end, I\u2019m excited to use everything that I\u2019ve learned in my future goals. Fortunately, I plan on continuing with the ENDS Study. I reached out a few days ago about the possibility of staying on and was met with open arms! I hope to continue with my qualitative interviews and help them with their next research phase. As for career goals, I think this experience will be a profound help. As stated in my first blog, I want to delve into clinical and public health research.
