My research involves professional discussion boards which exist as a platform allowing working professionals to share their opinions with anonymity. It is certain that abuse of said anonymity exist within the platform, with many people posting inappropriate and discriminatory messages. The objective of my project, otherwise known as the Blind Project, is to use Text Data analysis, in which the anonymous posts will be scraped for data which will allow us to quantify the level of gender-biased attitudes within the community of working professionals. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Women are often the subject of abuse in the workplace, regardless which company they work for. The Blind Project is an important step to understanding how abuse would manifest, especially through technologically sophisticated means. The Project would allow researchers to quantify to what degree gender-biased attitudes still exist, even if the companies proclaim to be inclusive. In such a way, sufficient studies could inform people of the abuse that we, as a society, should remain wary of. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
My role in this research is dealing with the data that are vital to the project. I mainly use computational statistics and languages such as R to process the data and to verify the company names that are involved in the project. Currently, I am mainly tasked with the merging of multiple data frames which will be further used in the future of the project. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
I believe my research follows the guidelines of research ethics well in the sense that we keep all the data from the posts anonymous. The project also understands the security required to keep the confidentiality of the data that is being scraped. More importantly, I believe the project takes into account the social responsibility it has over the implications the project may have on gender relations within the professional community. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
