This summer, I am working alongside Dr. Soofi and another WAGSFP student, Zara, to investigate the role that Pax2 genes play in ovarian cancer. Pax2 is a transcription factor that is fundamental for maintaining homeostasis in cells in the oviduct; this lab is looking at how alterations in oviduct cell homeostasis relates to ovarian cancer development. This work will help us understand the origin of epithelial ovarian cancer, the most common type of ovarian cancer, and could ultimately improve diagnostic methods and treatment options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dr. Soofi has given me the opportunity to explore different roles in the lab. I learned fundamental skills, such as genotyping, PCR, and how to prepare samples. I also have had a great deal of exposure to microscopy, imaging, and image analysis. Of all these lab tasks, I have most enjoyed taking images using the microscope and analyzing them. It has been awesome to have the opportunity to play a role in so many different aspects of the lab. I really appreciate seeing how each step plays a role in crafting a bigger picture of what the data is telling us. The lab team is incredibly welcoming and has been hands-on for all training, therefore I never am left feeling like I am unprepared for a task I am about to complete. My lab really emphasizes research ethics by following all procedures as outlined, handling data appropriately, and leaving room for clarification about anything taking place.
