Hello!<\/strong> My name is Angel Noble. I am a rising sophomore on the pre-medical track, and I am pursuing a double major in Public Health and Spanish. During my next three years as an undergraduate student, I hope to explore the intersection between scientific inquiry and healthcare policy\/reform. These interests compelled me to conduct research at the University of Michigan to explore my curiosity for the scientific world while pursuing my passion for public health issues on a granular level!\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This summer, I will be working under the mentorship of Dr. Abdullah Saeed to understand how immune cells interact with the tumor microenvironment in lung cancer. I have always been fascinated by the intricacies of cancerous cells, and this interest makes me incredibly excited to be working in an immuno-oncology lab that is learning how we can better equip our immune system to fight against cancer! This is also my very first time working in a lab and conducting research, so I am eager to experience the lab dynamics and apply the scientific method in immuno-oncology research! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over these next ten weeks, I hope to advance my understanding of the mechanisms employed by cancerous cells to evade immune detection and learn how we can inhibit these pathways to help our immune cells win the fight against cancer. I expect to learn about and conduct several research techniques, such as flow cytometry and western blotting, in order to analyze the components of immune and cancer cells. I also expect to conduct my own research on existing literature to compliment my understandings in the lab. Thankfully, I had started doing this prior to my start-date, which I believe has helped my transition into this lab. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although I am very hopeful for this research opportunity, I do expect to face certain challenges during this experience. I may experience challenges in regards to my expectations in this lab (as an undergraduate student with no research experience). However, I hope to mitigate this challenge by consistently communicating with my research mentor and being transparent throughout this process! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

By now, I hope it’s very clear how excited I am to conduct research and reflect on these experiences through the WAGSF program. I truly can\u2019t wait to see where these next ten weeks take me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
