I finished my fourth week working as an undergraduate research assistant and feel more equipped to tell you about the specifics of my research project. The purpose of my lab is to understand how immune cells interact with the lung tumor microenvironment, or the area surrounding a clump of cancerous cells. Why is this important to research? Our immune system is the first line of defense against cancerous cells. Cytotoxic t-cells and Natural Killer (NK) cells are two of the most effective immune cells that aid in the fight against cancer. Given the importance of our immune cells in the field of oncology, one of the primary ambitions of this lab is to use techniques such as flow cytometry and immunohistochemistry to understand the prevalence and function of immune cells. This information can be incredibly valuable in improving the efficacy of immunotherapies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
What are immunotherapies? Immunotherapies are drugs that can better equip our immune system to win the fight against cancer. These drugs can accomplish this goal in two ways:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Thus, one of the second ambitions of this lab is to better understand the function of immunotherapies to improve tailored treatments and patient outcomes. Ultimately, the implications of this research lab is significant towards our understanding of immune cells, their interactions with cancerous cells, and the function and efficacy of immunotherapies. This information can help us improve treatment modalities for lung cancer and better understand how to tailor immunotherapies based on a patient\u2019s immune system and type of cancer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
My contributions in this project are to help conduct experiments that address the two ambitions mentioned above. It is also important to note that this research is very detail-oriented and expensive, and thus it is my responsibility to approach these experiments with caution. It is imperative that I am continuously transparent and honest with my research mentor to ensure the accuracy and significance of our research findings. And of course, my most prominent responsibility in this research lab is to learn as much as I can about the complexities of immuno-oncology.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
