The research that I am working on includes working on two projects, both around the topic of trans men, pregnancy, and the media. One of these projects includes coding media articles that have referenced trans men being pregnant in the past twenty years. The other project includes going through Qualitative interviews conducted with trans men on their attitudes toward pregnancy and the media. My role in the research is to work with the other UROP researchers to get to Inter-Coder Reliability with how we are coding the media articles. We\u2019re going off of Billard\u2019s work done in 2016 that classifies nine codes for how the media uses language either in a positive, negative, or neutral way to characterize trans men and their experiences. We work together as a team to come to agreement about how to apply the codes, and have even come up with a new code to add to Billard\u2019s work.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When it comes to the qualitative interviews I\u2019m looking over, I go through each one very carefully to make sure that the correct word or phrase has been transcribed, that the right person is being credited for speaking, the right formatting, etc. These transcripts have yet to be de-identified, so I take it very seriously to take care of their stories and information and to keep it all confidential. This has been a really helpful project to work on because I plan to run my own qualitative study interviews for my honors thesis. I\u2019ve been learning and gaining such valuable knowledge about the research process and the experiences of trans men around their expression of masculinity, their attitudes towards pregnancy and parenthood, and their views on media representation. As a reproductive justice advocate, it\u2019s exciting to be a part of research that is advocating for and including people often left out of the pregnancy discussions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
