Along with the collection of research, the team is developing a Black History Month Programming Toolkit inspired by focus group participants and survey respondents who did not conduct such programming and indicated their uncertainty about where to begin and how to create successful programming as a barrier to starting. Respondents can indicate their interest in having the toolkit sent to them while taking the national survey. This will hopefully benefit rural and small libraries specifically, which are more likely to lack the necessary funding and staffing to carry out this programming. The toolkit will address disparities in resources and funding as well as differences in community demographics and needs. This is vitally important, as libraries are important community sites providing services beyond the books in their collections. Offering programming that speaks to individual communities not only provides important, no-cost, and community-minded knowledge but might also hopefully make community members feel more comfortable coming into the library for other patron services. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Libraries are, however, finding themselves at the center of cultural debate, leading to book bannings and restrictions on programming, especially programming relating to race and sexuality. This could potentially put librarians in a vulnerable position as the survey asks about programming that library directors or states have forbidden librarians from putting on. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
I am specifically working on a literature review about knowledge of the community, as a scale has not yet been created, unlike the Community Humility scale.
