Hi everyone! I’m excited to be giving this update about the research I have been doing for the last month because I’ve been really enjoying this experience. The two projects I’ve been most closely working on use tissue engineering scaffolds to predict\/surveil the immune responses of mice. One of them studies pregnancy health and fetal growth restriction in the pups, and the other is looking at endometriosis and how we can replicate that in mice in order to learn more about it. This research can make a huge impact for women’s health, with pregnancy, fertility, and pain management, which is an important reason for why I’m invested in it this summer. Specifically, endometriosis affects about 10% of women globally, so we have the potential to help a lot of people. However, we are at the beginning stages of thinking about this problem, so I think that what has been most valuable thus far is what I’ve been learning about the process of gather background information and thinking about how we can apply it using our specific lab’s techniques. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
My role in these projects largely involves animal work and preparation\/literature review. Once we have our samples, I will also be assisting with techniques such as flow cytometry and histology. There are a few ethical considerations to think about, given the use of research mice. It can be difficult sometimes, but we monitor them closely and always give the best care as possible. We administer pain medication and follow ULAM\/IACUC protocols. Their use in research is incredibly valuable for replicating human conditions and performing preclinical studies. Overall, I’m grateful to have the opportunity to continue working on these projects and I’m looking forward to the rest of the summer. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
