It\u2019s been about one month of working for this project on the history of the Rackham School and graduate research, and I\u2019ve settled into routines that I enjoy. For the first couple weeks, I felt aimless and also overwhelmed with possible things to do, especially since we hadn\u2019t gotten into the archive (Bentley) yet; at this point, I know what information I\u2019m looking for and how to document it, and I\u2019m still learning how best to organize it. After weeks of collecting information and just noting down whatever was in the boxes and files, I now am in the process of 1) continuing to collect relevant information, 2) parsing back through the materials with a different perspective, 3) compiling, rereading, editing, and organizing all my notes, and 4) developing larger themes and narratives for the final exhibit, handouts, and poster for the UROP symposium. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
I have gotten good experience with sort of monotonous tasks\u2013sorting through endless papers and files\u2013and learning to search for and pick out what\u2019s important to me so I don\u2019t tire too quickly. Another challenge I\u2019ve encountered is finding the motivation to get on my computer and do the work of sorting and editing when I don\u2019t have to go into an office or anything. I find it helpful to go into the library archive, look through some files, switch to computer work, and then go back to looking at files; being in an external and quiet space (that I associate with work) really helps me focus. I have loved using material documents like handbooks, letters, and newspapers to follow trajectories over time: registration processes, student experience, etc. My favorite artifacts to look at are student-published handbooks and newspapers because they have informal language, student opinions, and often, sarcastic jokes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Overall, I\u2019m glad I\u2019m a part of this project; I feel like a career in a similar subject would be right for me. I\u2019m always excited to go look at some old stuff, analyze it, and draw connections.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
