About

Words travel quickly around the globe. Yet understanding what they mean doesn’t happen automatically. It takes a time to learn a foreign language: to find paths into it and through it to discover the world from another angle.

This blog highlights the translation activities of students of the Modern Greek Program at the University of Michigan. It may be work they  produced in a class or independently in another setting.

Translation is an activity used very purposefully in our courses. We see it as an intellectually demanding, creative, and richly rewarding process. Students  work collaboratively. They develop practical knowledge of Greek and English. They study history and culture. They appreciate the challenges of linguistic diversity. They take charge of their reading and viewing activities, define their projects, and produce work that matters.
