Course Materials and Pacing – Math 105

Course Materials and Pacing

The exact course schedule will depend on the semester in which the course is offered, and the course coordinator. However, a rough outline of the time that we spend on each of the different mathematical topics in the course is given by the following (times are based on a 14 week semester, excluding a week of finals). Below this, we include some sample course materials to illustrate the type of work expected of students.

  • Linear Functions and Rates of Change: 2 weeks
  • Functions: 2 weeks
  • Quadratic Functions: 1 week
  • Exponential Functions: 1 week
  • Logarithmic Functions: 1 week
  • Transformations of Functions and Their Graphs: 1.5 weeks
  • Trigonometry and Trigonometric Functions: 2 weeks
  • Compositions and Combinations of Functions: 1.5 weeks
  • Rational Functions: 2 weeks

In our current textbook (Functions Modeling Change, by Connally, et al., and published by Wiley) we cover sections 1.1–1.5, 2.1–2.6, 3.1, 3.2, 4.1–4.5, 5.1–5.3, 6.1–6.3, 7.1–7.8, 8.1, 9.1, 10.1–10.4, and 11.1–11.6.
