Pacing of the Course – Math 215

Pacing of the Course

Course Pacing Overview

Math 215 covers essentially four or five chapters of material from a standard multivariable calculus text, including the following. The times are given in the context of a 14 week semester (that does not include a week of finals).

  • Vectors and Objects in 3D Space, including dot and cross products, equations of lines and planes, cylinders and quadratic surfaces (2 weeks)
  • Vector Functions and Space Curves, including differentiation and integration, arc length, and motion in space (1 week)
  • Functions of Two and Three Variables, including surfaces, partial differentiation, tangent planes and linear approximation, the chain rule, directional derivatives and the gradient vector, optimization and Lagrange multipliers (3 weeks)
  • Double and Triple Integrals, including polar, cylindrical, and spherical coordinates, applications, and a brief discussion of change of variables (3 weeks)
  • Vector Fields and Line Integrals, including the Fundamental Theorem for line integrals, conservative fields, and Green’s Theorem (2 weeks)
  • Curl, Divergence, Parametric Surfaces, Surface Integrals, and Stokes’ and the Divergence Theorem (3 weeks)

Sample Semester Schedules

Sample day-by-day schedules from recent semesters are given below.  Please note that these are not current and are provided only to give a historical sense of the pacing through the semester.
