Abstract

Research was conducted in order to develop and implement initiatives for an organization, United Community Addiction Network (UCAN), to carry out in response to patients in Michigan who suffer from the disease of addiction. This project “A Deeper Look into the World of Addiction” is focussing on hospitals and healthcare community initiatives. Specifically focussing on improving the Quick Response Team (QRT) and learning more about geriatric patients who endure the disease of addiction. This study stems from data, provided by the University of Michigan, that shows a breakdown of hospitalization and deaths due to opioids and other drugs based on county, race, gender, and age in the state of Michigan. Statistics were also gathered from various articles and databases from the state of Michigan, as well as, learning about initiatives and methods various hospitals use and implement. Based on the provided data and information gathered, it was shown that people who experience an overdose are patients 55+. This knowledge can also be used to educate communities in order to destigmatize and change stereotypes of addiction due to how most people believe that college students make up the most population for overdoses and addiction. Patients who are 55+ should have a different treatment plan than younger age groups and sometimes are not given specialized care. This growing project to implement initiatives in the healthcare system will continue to advocate for patients and create treatment options for geriatric patients that best suit their lifestyle.
