Abstract

Socioeconomic resources generate outcomes or returns, e.g., parental education reduces the risk of children’s depression. According to the Marginalization-related Diminished Returns (MDRs) theory, however, resources generate systematically smaller returns in terms of health and development for marginalized groups (specifically Blacks and Hispanics) than their non-Hispanic White counterparts. To expand the literature on the existence of MDRs and their possible causes, secondary data analyses of existing large-scale national health data sets have been conducted. In this project, a summary of the recent findings from the secondary data analyses is provided. By bringing MDRs to light, this project not only expands our knowledge on why health disparities persist in the US, but also sheds light on future healthcare policy making.
