Abstract

“Study of Effective Post-Abortion Care Methods to Progress Less-Developed Countries ” Navya Paingol, University of Michigan, 2022 Abortion complications often lead to post abortion care (PAC), a necessity that most countries do not provide. Finding effective post abortion care methods by incorporating various aspects of research to present to policymakers in Somaliland and DRC is just a starting point to making a larger difference in the realm of opportunity for PAC. Attempting to find practical methods, we began investigating facets of post-abortion care including but not limited to: inconsistency in supplies and its distribution, inadequate staffing, lack of knowledge of health care providers, and government policy in general. By studying scholarly articles, we began an exploration of examples of cost- analysis and cost-effective analysis, in order to find the best options for less developed countries. Midwife education has been the leading development in accordance with the research found. Bridging the gap between theoretical and clinical practice, along with incorporating training for usage of effective and affordable methods such as Manual Vacuum Aspiration (MVA) and misoprostol usage can be a leading practical plan. For more detail: manual vacuum aspiration and use of more naturally functional medicine are widely found to be the most cost-effective option. Successful implementation includes solutions such as a formal plan for supply shortage, an increase in support for midwives whether it is for education or by enforcing stricter guidelines and a change of methods. This project aims to make impactful changes if policy-makers comprehend the extensive need for change that we display through our research, the population of women struggling through their post-abortion period will benefit largely.
