Abstract

To inspire and encourage youth voter turnout, Edie Goldenberg and UM campus organization, Turn Up Turnout, sought to create an educational and community-centered program of workshops (Dinners for Democracy) for discussion of public policy issues that are relevant to college voters. Workshops aim to connect a student’s passion for a policy issue to voting for specific down-ballot offices. Topics range from the judicial system to renewable energy policy to Medicaid expansion. Research on this project includes the topic research necessary for the development of the dinners on different policy issues, attention to presentation format and style to present those dinners most effectively, and evaluation of the learning that takes place. The targeted population for this program includes students from all three of the University of Michigan campuses. ??Attendee targeting is done through a variety of intentional marketing efforts such as publicizing in particular major newsletters and connecting with relevant student organizations. Through Qualitics survey data, we have been able to measure demographic information of attendees and their retention of information shared in the Dinner. This program is still a work in progress, but the dinners have been well attended and we have received positive anecdotal feedback from many attendees. We have many repeat attendees who come back to watch the dinners again or sample some of the other topics. This points to the fact that the dinners are an interesting opportunity for students and, hopefully, that momentum can improve their educational reach and the likelihood of voting the full ballot in 2022.
