Abstract
For two years, the coronavirus pandemic has completely changed the lives of millions of Americans. For this reason, it is important to make predictions about the future of this disease so that scientists, hospitals, and the general population can be more informed and prepared for upcoming spikes in cases. This project uses ridge regression to predict COVID-19 cases and deaths each week. Ridge regression, a machine learning technique, is a variant of linear regression used to generate better predictions. To make these predictions, past data regarding vaccinations, cases, deaths, and hospitalizations are used to output predicted future cases and deaths. The results of this project are graphs that display forecasted values of daily and weekly cases and deaths in six states (Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, and Pennsylvania). These results can be used to influence policy decisions to help curb the effects of the pandemic.
