Abstract
In U.S. history, the Progressive Era is known as one of the most influential and formative eras of our nation, giving us women’s suffrage, labor rights, industrialization, and more. Although historians and their contemporaries are well versed in the time period, there is little known about the work done to make such landmark legislation possible. Our project, Lobbying on Constitutional Amendments, focuses on the efforts of lobbyists in the early 1900s to push the laws that made the Progressive Era so momentous. Our research serves the purpose of providing political scientists, historians, students, and academics with the invaluable information that led to the importance of the era we are studying. By studying documents and the legislation of the time, we will be able to better understand how political processes have functioned and evolved over time. From this research we will also be able to learn more about the varying groups and organizations advocating for change back then and their current significance. In this project, the mentors and research assistants focus on transcribing past lobbyist documents, analyzing data and statistics, and learning about the history of the Progressive Era in order to gain the best understanding we can of this monumental place in time.
