Abstract
The United States healthcare system has systematically been an unequal system to people of color historically and still is to this day. A specific area that is facing extreme fatalities in minority communities is peri/postpartum care. Our study focuses on researching the racial disparities causing the faults in peri/postpartum care such as the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on these disadvantaged communities revolving around maternal health as well as maternal mental illness. Our study uses a conceptual model introduced by Brazeau and other colleagues(2018), including postpartum depression, maternal trauma experiences, emotional support, and maternal self-efficacy and the relationship among them, as well as an intersectionality framework. We will be studying these by directly contacting women of color and studying their experiences through their peri/postpartum journey and comparing their experiences to the white mothers in our study. This research will help diminish the racial disparities in maternal mental illness as well as the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on these mothers. At the end of our study, our findings will inform community resources, clinical practice, as well as new policy on how to improve the overall maternal care of minority mothers.
