Abstract
Motor skill interventions are normally implemented by experts, thus, there is a need to develop effective training strategies to train non-motor experts to effectively implement these programs. The purpose of this study was to quantify the amount of time needed to develop an online training of the Children’s Health Activity Motor Program (CHAMP) for after-school program instructors. The online training consisted of 12 presentations across 5 modules. All content was created by four experts: the creator of CHAMP, a CHAMP expert with 9 years of experience with the program, an expert in afterschool physical activity programming, an expert in intervention design and feasibility , and two undergraduate research assistants. The time for development was recorded via a google sheet and included time (in minutes) and the type of content produced. Results show that experts spent a total of 2,670 minutes (~ 44.5 hours) developing the training (1685 minutes/28.1 hours reading literature and creating presentations and learning checks, 540 minutes/9 hours for meetings with research assistants, 120 minutes/2 hours revising or providing feedback, 210 minutes/3.5 hours for editing powerpoints, and 115 minutes/1.9 hours for video recording). The research assistants spent 2008 minutes (~ 33.5 hours) developing the training (988 minutes/16.5 hours for editing the powerpoints, 540 minutes/9 hours for meetings with research mentors, and 480 minutes/8 hours collecting video clips). These results show that creating content for the CHAMP online training is feasible albeit somewhat labor intensive. The next steps for this training include the continued editing of powerpoints, the development of the Canvas website, and video recording.
