Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationships between demographic variables, barriers to getting the vaccine, and COVID-19 vaccine uptake among the Asian American community in Eastern Michigan. We are working with the Center for Health Disparities and Studies (CHDIS) at Eastern Michigan University to understand the specific needs of the Asian American community. Background: CHDIS focuses on improving the overall health of underserved communities through research, education, and promotion. Despite the myth that Asians are model minorities, a group that achieves a higher degree of socioeconomic success than others, previous research has shown that health disparities exist among these groups. Thus, the topic of health disparities among Asian Americans regarding access to vaccines has been under-investigated but can be explored further. Methods: We obtained quantitative data through a self-administered survey. Survey data were collected from a sample size greater than 500 at multiple locations around Eastern Michigan including grocery stores and community centers. The survey included questions about demographic factors, barriers to accessing the COVID-19 vaccine, and receiving vaccine information. Results: We conducted statistical analysis through SPSS using binary logistic regression, but the study is ongoing and the results are to be determined. Conclusion: This study is a part of a growing body of research on health disparities present in Asian American groups. Despite the belief that Asian Americans are a model minority, this project continues to dispel these myths while also focusing on solutions to overcome such health disparities.
