Abstract
The goal of this project is to find how people from different countries believe that online social media harassment should be handled, especially in non-Western countries, as past research has been done on this topic specifically in the United States. This is part of a larger project that focuses on responses to social media harassment as a whole, especially such as the experiences of specific demographics. For example, a past study examined how women experienced online harassment, including what forms of harassment they considered to be most harmful and what they believed should be done to deal with it. In particular, there is an interest in whether or not it is more common for people from specific countries to believe more/less in a police response to online harassment. Responses were gained by sending surveys with short answer written responses to people from 14 different regions, with about 300 responses from each region. These answers were translated and are currently being coded into different categories. This will allow for the qualitative, written response data to be quantified in order to obtain numerical results.
