Abstract
This report analyzes state laws across all 50 states regarding the level of interference permitted into the fiscal health and management of local school districts. It categorizes the laws based on the level of the codified intervention and assesses the extent at which each state has legislated on this topic. Additionally, it is analyzing how the implementation of these laws differs by observable descriptive characteristics such as geographic location, political leaning, and demographics like race or socioeconomic station. We descriptively analyze these to assess any potential trends and geographic variation of the data. NexisUni, a legal database, was also used to gain further information on specific pieces of legislation. STATA was then utilized to assess any potential trends found in the data. The conclusions found through this research will then be compiled into a succinct policy tool that then can be given to policymakers to better inform their decision making. This research will prove to be an invaluable asset to policymakers across the country and will prevent further inequity across racial and socioeconomic lines.
