Abstract
Firearm violence strongly impacts the youth of America– the mortality rate is 15% higher than that of car crashes. Much of the research into firearm violence has been explanatory rather than useful in intervening. In addition, the emergency department serves as a direct way to make large impacts in people’s lives– serving as a wake-up call. Project SPARK’s research intends to explore predictors of firearm violence with the aim of validating a predictor model to implement in emergency departments. The project aims to: 1) Conduct a long-term study in diverse urban ED’s 2) Validate SAFETY test measures 3) Improve testing capabilities by ranking risk factors on their predictive ability.
