Abstract
The relationships between employees and their leaders say more than they show in explaining what makes a good leader. This can often answer the question of, “How does hierarchy in the workplace relate to productivity and positive employee-employer relationships? And why?†This study uncovers what positive attributes make a good leader and how it relates to the rest of the workplace environment. For this project, my team’s objectives are to explore (1) the phenomenon of leadership (2) the effectiveness of having a leader to keep an individual accountable, and (3) the effects of good leadership in relation to organizational dynamics and performance. To break down the questions around the phenomenon of leadership, my team explores 1)scholarly literature relevant to leadership 2) perform gig sessions with random participants to analyze their productivity while working virtually 3) perform interviews with leaders of all kinds in the workplace and what struggles they have faced in the last few years and 4) perform a field survey for leaders and their employees to identify similarities and differences. An analysis of our compiled data and these methodologies finds that (1) leader-like attributes along with good employee-employer relationships does correlate to better productivity and satisfaction within the company and (2) those who work for themselves find that they are more productive when they have a leader-like figure guiding them and keeping them accountable for their time. These findings help add to our understanding of how hierarchy in the workplace is beneficial to organizational performance and how it may different in and between them. In revealing these findings, this study will contribute to future research in categorizing and defining different aspects of leadership effectiveness, and these effects on subordinates and organizational performance.
