Abstract
The study investigates whether socio-political agreement affects the degree of linguistic alignment at either lexical level (deals with lexical meaning of a word) or syntactic (deals with grammar and structure of sentences). The results of this study were gathered through an online interview with the participants. The participants were required to listen to a pre-recorded speaker who would take on socio-political stances and explain his beliefs on topics such as climate change, wages, and healthcare. Participants were also listened to the pre-recorded speaker describe drawings, as well as describing a similar drawing themselves (measure degree of linguistic alignment). The results showed that socio-political agreement doesn’t affect the degree of linguistic alignment at both lexical and syntactic level. A trend had also appeared throughout the study where the participants who had identified themselves as conservative would agree less with the speaker than those who considered themselves as liberal.
