Abstract

Our jawbone is very important and unique taking pivotal roles in supporting soft tissues, providing shape to the face, making facial expressions, and mastication. With the difference of jawbones to other bones such as long bones in our body, the same BMP signaling condition might lead to different effects. According to existing research findings, loss of BMP signaling leads to less bone mass in the jawbones, which is an opposite bone phenotype compared to that found in long bones. We hypothesize that mechanical stress of chewing plays an important role in differential response between jawbones and other bones to growth factor signals. To reach the study goal, I will retrieve jawbones from control and mutant mice fed with either a hard or soft diet and assess how mechanical stress difference changes gene expression and protein levels in Jawbones by PCR and immunofluorescence assays.
