Abstract
We designed a mouse model that expresses the K5Gli2 transgene to induce basal cell carcinoma. Activating the hedgehog pathway signaling has led to an increase in nearby melanocytes, likely caused by increased Wnt ligands secreted by the tumor. We hypothesize that an increase in melanocytes correlates to an increase in macrophages which clean up the melanin pigment and potentially suppress tumor development.
