Abstract
This project is analyzing interviews collected with U-M undergrads in fall 2020 to better understand their experiences of college. The interviews, conducted by other undergraduates as part of a “research experience” class, are primarily with BIPOC juniors and seniors, about half of whom are also first-gen college students. At present, we are focusing on understanding how students navigate U-M as a PWI (Predominantly-White Institution), how they balance allegiance to the institution with a critique of the racism they observe or experience while attending it, and how their pre-college experiences shape their interpretations of the environment they encounter at U-M. We are also interested in the tradeoffs between attending an institution that is well-resourced but at which one’s group is underrepresented, and one that is less-resourced, but at which one’s background is normative. UROP students will participate in data cleaning and interview coding, and take part in lab meetings in which data is discussed and analyzed; they will also have the opportunity to learn about the sociology of higher education more generally and qualitative social science research.
