Abstract

Brilliant Detroit is a nonprofit dedicated to building kid success neighborhoods, where families have what they need to be school-ready, healthy, and stable. Using community-centered family, education, and health programming, they help children reach kindergarten readiness and grade-level literacy. There are currently twelve neighborhood hubs in operation, and the nonprofit is working towards expanding into more neighborhoods. This project seeks to incorporate both visual and quantitative data, aggregating eight factors (e.g. literacy rates, childcare facilities, health indicators, poverty levels) to help determine future neighborhood expansion. The Mapping Kid Success Neighborhood project comprises a map of current Brilliant Detroit hubs, the area covered by a 20-minute walking radius, and prospective zip codes and neighborhoods of fit, as well as a spreadsheet that ranks the neighborhoods and zip codes of fit. Using Data Driven Detroit’s State of the Detroit Child tool, a series of early childhood-centered metrics were compiled based on zip-code and neighborhood-level boundaries and used to rank each zip code and neighborhood based on their best fit for future scaling. Systematizing these metrics and ordering Detroit neighborhoods from most to least agreement based on the nonprofit’s core values and conditionality illustrates which neighborhoods indicate high compatibility with Brilliant Detroit’s services and programs. The map and spreadsheet provide another tool in the set of resources available to identify potential neighborhoods of fit that will benefit from Brilliant Detroit’s expansion.
