Abstract
The purpose of this research is to analyze how aware adolescents (e.g., ages 11 – 18) are of different forms of racism, such as individual, interpersonal, cultural, institutional, and historical. To explore the topic of racism and its impacts literature reviews were examined. Articles from Pubmed and the University of Michigan Library materials were synthesized on the topic of trauma, racism, mental health, children and topics of racial awareness. Secondly, for data collection, 1 on 1 interviews were conducted between students and members of the research team as primary evidence of how we can measure the racism awareness of students. A qualitative analysis of the audio was done by transcribing ( transcripts were used in place of the audio from the interviews to study and observe the data). A de-identification process(such as the substitution of a participant’s name with their ID) was utilized to protect the identities of the interviewees in addition to securing the data to prevent unauthorized access. With this data a scale that represents the racism awareness of different age groups of students will be produced. The end goal of the project is to use the scale within racial trauma intervention programs as well as other systems that impact everyday life in order to aid the building of racial resilience within black youth.
