Abstract
Ultrasound technology has been historically used in prenatal care and is one of the primary associations with the modality. However, ultrasound has a lot of other potential applications. One currently developing area is in the dental and periodontal fields. The objective of this research is to learn how to harnish ultrasound’s high soft-tissue contrast. This research compares ultrasound-derived images to histology. It evaluates the possibility of ultrasound, to obtain soft- and hard-tissue information in clinical settings where histology is not possible and radiation (x-ray / CBCT) is not preferable for frequent use and is potentially harmful. This study is ongoing and preliminary results show promising corresponding features between ultrasound and histology. Future results are expected to demonstrate that ultrasound-derived images can be used to monitor and evaluate for example bone grafts, that may be placed ahead of the insertion of an implant to warrant optimal implant anchoring.
