Abstract
Malpractice within our healthcare system results in improper care which can lead to other serious health consequences. One of the leading causes of healthcare malpractice is poor communication and a lack of shared understanding between physicians and nurses. While there is a vast amount of research focused on group communication and shared understanding, there has not been much research within the context of our healthcare system. In order to collect data for this research, video recordings of physicians, nurses, and patients interacting within hospitals were taken. From there, each video had to be transcribed sentence by sentence. After transcription, the videos had to be annotated. To annotate the transcriptions, each sentence in the recording is given a VRM (Verbal Response Mode) label depending on the form of communication used in the sentence. These labels include disclosure, advisement, edification, confirmation, question, interpretation, reflection, and acknowledgement. We are currently in the annotating phase of the research process, so it is unclear what kind of results the data will yield. However, the goal is to reach conclusive results that allow us to break down the flaws in communication among healthcare professionals so that we can make suggestions that will be beneficial to the teamwork inside hospitals.
