Abstract
This research project measures the prosody of native Spanish speakers. Spanish prosody focuses on the stress, intonation, and rhythm with which native Spanish speakers pronounce their words. This research is concerned with characterizing Spanish pronunciation, analyzing patterns within, and understanding the process of developing their speech patterns. We noticed that native Spanish speakers tend to whisper when finishing an important statement. For this project, we watched content from Telediario 1, a televised, Spanish-speaking news network in Spain. We searched for patterns within their speaking styles by listening to each word, finding when the newscasters whisper, coding the pronunciation of the word, then inputting the data to find conclusive evidence. Currently, we are further investigating when this whisper happens, and who it affects, and why. In the future, the project seeks to continue exploring this whisper phenomenon and propose explanations for why the whisper occurs. The research project aims to continue striving to understand Spanish linguistics and prosody thoroughly.
